When evening came, they brought to Jesus many that
were possessed with demons: and He cast out the evil
spirits with His word, and healed all that were sick.

The Bible lets us know that we are living in a supernatural world...
That there is more to life than what can be seen with our physical eyes.
Yet some who claim to be Christians are skeptical and embarrassed by the belief of a literal Devil. They refuse to recognize the supernatural dimension of evil. According to the Scriptures, the Lord Jesus had many encounters with both demons and Satan.
On His travels, Christ would often come upon those who were the victims of evil spirits. They were troubled and tormented, and were unable to break free from the grip these creatures had upon them.
In some cases, these demons caused people to become insane, while others were made physically sick or left crippled. They could cause others to live a sinful lifestyle. And still other evil spirits would try to get their victim to commit suicide, or to harm someone else.
Demons, I believe, took control of the mind of Adolf Hitler. They could even create demonically engineered miracles so as to deceive the rulers of nations to go to war (Revelation 16:13-14).
In many cases, a victim of demonic oppression may not even know he has a demon residing within. Some may even have more than one. And as revealed in the Scriptures, demons can communicate with one another, and even gang up on a targeted victim (Matthew 12:43-45).
However, someone becoming completely possessed, as portrayed in the popular movie, The Exorcist, is very rare. Such a Hollywood-styled depiction does much harm because it makes the reality of demons seem like fiction. Yet the Bible makes clear the reality of demonic activity.
In addition, evil spirits are adept at hiding within their victims. In some cases, they will use these unfortunate souls to carry out acts of violence. Only God knows how many horrible and seemingly inexplicable crimes have been the result of some degree of demonic influence.
But the good news is that God has His angels to watch over us, and they are infinitely more powerful than all of Satan’s workers. As the Bible says concerning God’s children, “For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways” (Psalm 91:11).
A disciple of Christ has nothing to fear when it comes to facing the Prince of Darkness and his demonic host. As the Scripture boldly declares, “Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
Yet, demons remain formidable foes, and every follower of Jesus Christ needs to be reminded of this. Nevertheless, God has made available to us the “full armor” to dress our selves in, and He has given every born-again believer in Christ the authority and power to overcome them.
I have much more to say on this important subject, but I’ll save it for a later time. Demons are real, and they are responsible for wreaking much havoc and suffering upon an unaware humanity, and they fear exposure.
“For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8b).
