I have great reluctance when it comes to responding to inquiries from the media...
So, back in July, when I received a letter from Fox News journalist, Joshua Rhett Miller, I was hesitant to reply. However, after several weeks passed, I began to sense a prompting from the Lord to write back and answer his questions.
Mr. Miller asked me a handful of questions, from what have I been doing with my life now, to if I exercise regularly, to if I have regret for the crimes I committed. But, more importantly, he asked if I was seeking parole in 2012, which happens to be when my next scheduled parole hearing is going to be held. This is always a hot topic with the media, even though I am serving multiple life sentences.
In my reply, I explained to Mr. Miller that I was not planning to seek parole, and I told him why. Then, after mailing the letter, weeks passed, and I heard nothing further from him.
However, on August 24th, Fox News released an online story. It was titled, EXCLUSIVE: ‘SON OF SAM’ SERIAL KILLER DAVID BERKOWITZ SAYS HE WON’T SEEK PAROLE IN 2012. And even before I was able to view the internet article, as it first had to be downloaded by a friend and mailed to me, the following day several other media outlets picked up the story and were reporting on it, too.
To my surprise, the Fox News piece turned out to be well-balanced and fair. I was quoted as saying that I had already been pardoned for my crimes, and for all my sins as well, by the Lord Jesus Christ. And, because of this, I already consider myself to be a "free man."
In addition, Mr. Miller mentioned how I work at the prison as a trained sighted-guide for the men who are legally blind. Also, that I assist those who are mentally challenged, and that I help oversee our chapel services and Bible studies. I was quoted as saying how Jesus Christ has "given me a whole new life," and how I am grateful to have God’s forgiveness. That I have deep regret and sorrow over my past criminal acts.
All told, it was a positive piece, and I was pleased with it. Mr. Miller was very professional, and I am grateful he did not try to sensationalize anything.
Furthermore, the New York Daily News picked up the story too. In a short article, that appeared on page two of their Thursday, August 25th edition, the title read, Son of Sam Killer: Jesus Forgives Me.
The News article was written by reporter Glenn Blain. It was short and to the point, and it was an abbreviated take on the original Fox News story. Thankfully, it wasn’t a negative or sarcastic piece.
So I am thankful the story came out the way it did, and I don’t believe any of my victims or their families were offended by it. Thank God!
