Being that I am confined to a prison in New York State, it so happens that I must live alongside many men who are of the Muslim religion...
Whether I'm at my job, or in the recreation area, or in the housing unit, I have to interact with those who follow the tenets of Islam. Not only so, but as a general rule, there are more inmates who are Muslim than there are those like myself who practice evangelical Christianity. At least this is true in New York's correctional institutions.
Obviously, therefore, this presents a challenge for me as I seek to live for Jesus Christ, and as I desire to represent the Lord in this environment. Nevertheless, one would be surprised to know just how many who follow Islam would on occasion privately confide in me about spiritual matters. Knowing that I'm a Christian, I've had many Muslims quietly ask me to pray for a family member or about a personal situation. And when things like this happen, it helps me to better understand that no one is beyond the loving reach of the Lord Jesus.
As I have said so often, jails and prisons are a mission field of precious souls. In here, I've got many opportunities to show my fellow inmates what being a Christian is all about. It's a big responsibility, too. It's nothing to take lightly, because one day I will have to stand before the Lord to give an account of how I lived for Him. I hope I hear the words, "Well done."
