This afternoon I went outdoors. It was another beautiful autumn day...
Sunny. Sparkling fall foliage. A magnificent display of reds, yellows, and browns, with blends of orange and gold. An orchestra of colors, and a treat for me.
As I walked the prison yard's perimeter, I did my usual. I stopped to check on Miss Goldie and gaze upon her beauty. But when I did, I got a big surprise. Miss Goldie apparently has a suitor.
I must admit, he's handsome looking. Standing tall with regal elegance and all decked out in shades of bright orange, I confess to feeling a tinge of jealousy. "Where did he come from?" I wondered.
He's a large tree that stands directly behind Miss Goldie. He's at least a dozen feet taller than her, and his many branches far outstretch Goldie's. It's almost as if he's protecting her. A guardian of her frail frame and an overseer of her gorgeous yellow leaves, I named him "Mister Orange."
Why? Because all his leaves are orange. Each leaf is the same color as a fresh pumpkin at harvest time. Amazingly, he turned orange overnight. I didn't see him a few days before. The big tree behind Miss Goldie was a dull, unimpressive green. But now a king has suddenly appeared.
Is Goldie in love? I think so. His leaves are touching hers. Mister Orange and Miss Goldie. I'm certain that their Creator knew, as the centuries went by, and as both of them grew side by side with their roots intermingling beneath the surface, love would come. And it has!
Good for them. I wish Mister Orange and Miss Goldie the very best. I will miss them when autumn turns to winter and all their colorful leaves are gone. But spring will come, as it always does. That's when Mister Orange and Miss Goldie will be back in full bloom. I cannot wait!
