Today brought an end to a 4-day spiritual retreat which is held every October in the prison’s gymnasium...
The event was sponsored by an organization known as Kairos. They have many chapters throughout the United States and in different countries as well. Kairos teams visit correctional facilities to conduct their retreats.
All the members of Kairos are volunteers. They’re a big help to those like myself by keeping me encouraged in my walk with the Lord. I appreciate how they devote their lives and time by providing spiritual support to the men and women who are incarcerated.
My task was to help serve Friday’s meal. Other inmates were assigned to serve on the other days. It was fun, but it was hard work, too. In addition to unloading the food carts, my task was to dish out the mashed potatoes and pour gravy over them. For lunch, I helped pass out the beverages and sandwiches.
Then, during the closing ceremony that was held earlier, I was asked by the leader of the Kairos team to give the farewell talk. So I spoke for about five minutes on what Kairos and their visits mean to us.
Afterwards, we all said our goodbyes. The Kairos team of twenty-five men were escorted out of the facility, while the inmates were searched one at a time and returned to our respective cell blocks. It was a weekend well spent.
