I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.

And for the inmates at Shawangunk Correctional Facility, a group of about two dozen volunteers who are affiliated with the Kairos ministry on the outside are here with us now in order to conduct a four-day spiritual retreat.
I was fortunate to have been able to attend my first Kairos gathering last year. It was the first time in my forty years of incarceration that I was able to participate in such an event as the Kairos program is not in existence in all of New York's prisons. Sullivan, the facility I'd be housed in for twenty-eight years didn't allow for the Kairos team.
Now, however, it's my second year to attend the retreat. It's also a blessing and joy to be surrounded by ordinary citizens from the outside, being allowed to freely mix with them. About forty-five inmates are enrolled in this year's Kairos gathering, many for the first time.
Today I volunteered to be a food server and waiter, which was humbling. My job was to help make up the meals for everyone and then carry everything, to include the beverages, to each table where all the inmates and civilian volunteers ate together. Then came the cleanup. A full day's work for me!
