The cell block has yet to erupt with its usual array of noise and commotion. Bells have yet to ring. Steel doors are yet to open with a loud pop, followed several minutes later with a building shaking boom as sixty-eight electronically controlled doors slam shut at once. It's an ear-splitting boom that rattles your bones and your nerves.
Early in the morning, however, most of the men are still asleep. So there's no yelling or screaming going on. Such sounds will come later once the shrill jangling of the 6:30 wake-up bell causes sleepy eyes to open. And immediately after the bell stops, the housing officer starts his shouts for everyone to get up for the head count. But until these things happen, as they do seven days per week, the pre-dawn morning is my time of calm before the storm. I can pray, read my Bible, and silently reflect upon the Lord.
Today I happened to read the 89th Psalm. It's a psalm that is rich in its descriptions of the beauty, power and majesty of the Almighty. Yes, from the realms of the furthest heavens where even the best of men's telescopes are yet to probe, as well as from the Earth itself, the Lord is worthy to be praised. His goodness is revealed from one end of the universe to the other.
Amen.
