The earth also was corrupt before God,
and the earth was filled with violence.

Genesis 6:11
This past Sunday, I was asked by my chaplain to open our worship service by leading the congregation in a unified prayer...
So I began by requesting prayer for those who’d lost a loved one in the senseless shooting inside a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It occurred on Saturday, October 27th, as members of that congregation gathered to honor the Jewish Sabbath as well as attend a baby-naming ceremony which was in progress at the time. The suspect was apprehended while in the act. He was identified as a rabid anti-Semite. Eleven people lost their lives.
The incident brought fear and unrest to our nation, especially to America’s Jewish communities. I found it both sad and poignant that such an act would occur in a house of worship called “Tree of Life.”
Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament, mentions the “tree of life” being in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:9 and 3:22). While the last book of the New Testament, Revelation, mentions the tree of life in heaven, and how there are twelve different kinds of fruit which grow on the tree. I believe these twelve fruits represent the twelve tribes of Israel. They will be for the “healing of the nations” (see Revelation 2:7 and 22:2).
Satan, I also believe, somehow placed it upon the heart of the perpetrator to launch an attack on this particular house of worship with the hope of killing as many Jews as possible. But the Devil’s days are numbered. The book of Revelation informs its readers that a “lake of fire” awaits him, and all who follow his ways.
As a fellowship behind prison walls, we regularly bring our requests to God in order to seek His strength and help, not only for ourselves, but for others as well. As a church, we are aware of the suffering that exists in the world, and so we pray.
