This afternoon, I answered a letter from a college student who wrote to tell me about her struggles with depression...
I encouraged her to do her best to stick with her studies, and not quit. She said she was thinking of dropping out. I told her that all her efforts to study and learn would be worth it in the end.
Far more importantly, however, I shared about my own struggles with depression, and how the Word of God (the Bible) as well as a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, has been what I needed to overcome depression and the accompanying feelings of hopelessness and despair.
I gave her several Scriptures that reveal God's love and concern for her. That having faith in the Lord and living by His strength and grace, is vital. She knows I'm a Christian.
And one particular verse that I wrote out for her was Psalm 103:13. "As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him."
I thanked her for writing and reaching out to me. It truly amazes me that strangers from all walks of life will sometimes write to me for help and advice about one matter or another. It's an honor and privilege, really. I don't take it lightly.
Ending my letter, I told her not to keep her feelings bottled up. To seek a church fellowship, as well as mental health counseling with a professional, and I let her know I will keep her in my prayers.
