Several days ago, I wrote about a man of the Muslim faith who asked me to explain what the "Proverbs" are…
I told him these are mostly words and sayings of wisdom from a section in the Old Testament known as the Book of Proverbs. I also told him that the proverbs cover a wide range of topics about life, and how they could be likened to "pearls of wisdom."
I then asked if he owned a Bible. He said he did not. So I told him that the next time I'm in the chapel, I will get a Bible and give it to him to keep. This is what I did. I gave him one of the Bibles that were donated to us from an organization known as the Gideons.
I was careful to put the Bible inside of a large manila envelope and waited until I had a degree of privacy before handing it over to him. I also put a bookmark inside it to show exactly where the Book of Proverbs can be found. I felt it was wise to do this because in this environment, a prisoner seen giving a Bible to someone of a different religion or to a known gang member could potentially create a problem. Not always, but sometimes.
Prisoners are a suspicious group. They're always watching. But being that most of the guys know me, giving another man a Bible would not have been all that big of a deal. But I didn't want to take a chance. The main thing, however, is that he can now read the Proverbs for himself.
Today, a Bible was delivered to a man who wanted one. Mission accomplished!
