Today, I took my usual position by the main entrance to the chapel...
...in order to greet every man who walked through the door. There were several new men, too. These were first time visitors who recently transferred here from other facilities.
I did, however, have a sermon prepared from the book of Ruth, just in case the inmate pastor asked me to preach. But, fortunately, our scheduled volunteer minister arrived, albeit a little late. He of course gave the sermon.
Being a doorkeeper is work enough, as the front door is a busy place. I have to hand out Bibles to those who need them, direct guys where to sit, answer questions if necessary, and help men fill out paperwork for all kinds of chapel related needs, including our prayer request forms. I also have to make sure every inmate signs the required attendance list correctly, as the prison's administration requires every man who enters the chapel to sign the attendance sheet.
And, when needed, I am available to give a message of encouragement (sometimes referred to as an exhortation), or to open the service in prayer, or present the main sermon. But I prefer being a door greeter the best. This is because I like having the opportunity to welcome everyone, and to socialize with them, as well.
As for my sermon, I'll save it for another time.
