It's been a somber day; it always is. It was a day of reflection, as well.
Today America honors its war dead, or at least some of us do....
Today America honors its war dead, or at least some of us do....
And here at the prison, as is our yearly custom, every Memorial Day men like myself who are veterans of some branch of the military, gather together in a large meeting room in an area of the facility known as the "North Complex" to reflect on this day, and to give respect to the men and women who have fallen during times of war.
I served three years in the U.S. Army from June 1971 to June 1974. And after completing my basic and advanced training I was assigned to an infantry unit in South Korea. But when my overseas tour of duty was up, I was sent to Fort Knox, Kentucky. Here I was retrained as a clerk typist and stationed at the Battalion Headquarters of a basic training unit.
But on this day, however, sixteen inmates and three civilian employees, who had also been in the military, came to meet together and pay our respects to those who gave up their lives to keep our country safe.
We all stood up for the opening prayer which officially started the gathering. While some of us took our respective turns to stand before the group and share our own experiences in the service and what Memorial Day means to us personally. The event went from 9 A.M. to two o'clock. And those of us who are still here plan to meet again next year.
