Mississippi's Parchman prison is notorious...
While most have never heard of it, those who are familiar with prisons know its reputation well. My friend Reverend Tony Loeffler, who recently returned from visiting the huge Parchman prison complex and its farm, said in a letter to me that it is "a really bad place." And that's putting it mildly.
According to the International Solid Rock ministry's newsletter, Parchman "remains a site of forced labor, deadly violence, and unsanitary conditions." The newsletter went on to say, "Recent videos and photos have exposed inhumane conditions such as rat-infested cells without power or mattresses, and unusable showers and toilets." While in 2020 Parchman had a "massive riot" along with a murder rate which "rivaled many cities" thus bringing national attention to the prison.
Thankfully, however, under a new Commissioner, Burl Cain, who also happens to be a devout Christian, many improvements have been made. For one, the prison complex has opened its doors to various religious ministries to the point where many of those incarcerated have since repented of their sins and have come to Christ. Even members of some of the state's most notorious gangs have since renounced their criminal ways and are now attending chapel services. Prisoners, many doing multiple life sentences, are responding to the Gospel message.
And a few weeks ago, I myself got to visit Parchman, just as I did the island of Cuba only weeks earlier. Once again, the Lord made a way using the Solid Rock Ministry team to pass out copies of my story of hope to many of those who are confined there.
Also in the letter from Tony, he wrote, "David, I will be distributing 800 of your Son of Hope pamphlets handing them out on the chow lines, and at the gospel concerts I will be performing at." All totaled, Tony gave out over a thousand copies of my story during his stay at Parchman.
For a man who's supposed to be confined to a prison in New York State, I sure do get around. Thanks to the Lord and my friends, several weeks ago I got to share my story with the residents of Cuba, and most recently at a huge prison complex in the state of Mississippi. With God, there are no limits. Nothing is impossible for him.
