It has been unseasonably cold of late...
The calendar says it's spring, but it feels like the middle of winter. Nevertheless, I opted to go outdoors for yesterday evening's recreation period. So at 7:30, I left my cell block behind and stepped into a biting cold, where the wind wasted no time letting me know it was going to rule the night. There was no escaping its sting.
Once outside, there was no going back until the recreation period was over at 10 PM. That's the policy, "If you go out, you stay out. No exceptions!" I had to keep moving to stay warm. Yet, being outdoors in this kind of weather was invigorating. It made me feel alive.
Nature can have this affect. Fresh is always better than stale. The cell block with its relentless noise and dry radiator heat is suffocating, not to mention unhealthy.
Because of the cold, the usual cluster of yard goers chose to stay indoors. I think there was maybe a total of ten men outside. This afforded me the space to relax and unwind from a busy day. I was able to walk alone and silently pray beneath the expanse of a dark sky.
