Now faith is the substance of things hoped
for, the evidence of things not seen.

Therefore, when our scheduled minister did not show up this morning, I had to give the sermon. I had the feeling this was going to happen. So God prepared me ahead of time to have a message ready. In fact, the Lord got me up earlier than I wanted to. My body was telling me to stay under the covers awhile longer. But the Holy Spirit said, "David, get up!" And so I did.
I taught on the subject of faith, what it is, and what it is not. It was a simple message, although I did include a number of Scriptures. I always want to keep my sermons plain and simple, however, so that even the slowest of learners could follow along and glean something. After all, this is a prison and not a Bible college. Perhaps seventy percent or more of these guys never finished high school.
Anyhow, the service went well. I told the men that faith is a multipurpose thing. This being that faith involves trusting the Lord (Proverbs 3:5-6). Faith also involves having to undertake a spiritual fight (1 Timothy 6:12 and 2 Timothy 4:7). It operates by love (Galatians 5:6 and 1 Corinthians 13:1-3). And faith is meant to be placed on display in the Christian's life (2 Corinthians 5:7). Furthermore, it is a vital piece of one's defensive spiritual armor that is needed to deflect all the "fiery darts" of the Devil (Ephesians 6:16).
