Debra was a devout Christian who loved God and loved people...
She first reached out to me in the 1990s when she heard about the story of my redemption. It so inspired her that she wrote to tell me how happy she was to learn about my faith. This led to a correspondence between us which lasted more than twenty years.
"Sister Debbie," as I liked to call her, was a godly woman. A farm girl from rural Missouri, she was faithful in praying for me. Debbie encouraged me in my own spiritual journey more than I was able to encourage her.
Debra had the voice of an angel. She would be invited to different churches to sing. However, sister Debbie was also very ill. She suffered physical discomfort and pain for much of her adult life. But her faith remained strong. It never wavered. She was a big source of inspiration.
Eventually, as her illness progressed, she ended up in the hospital. However, we continued to correspond. Deb's parents would take my cards and letters to her whenever they'd visit, and they in turn would mail her letters to me.
With her physical pain steadily increasing, Debbie was ready to go home. And that she did. It was now time for Deb to meet her Savior. Quietly He came. In an instant, Debra went from death to life. When she opened her eyes, Jesus was there to embrace her. Of this I have no doubt.
I will see my friend again. Of this I am certain.
