It has been a busy Saturday...
When I arrived at the kitchen, around eight o'clock, I found my work area piled high with dozens of greasy pots and pans of all sizes. They'd been sitting there all night, too, left uncleaned by last night's shift.
I'm part of a six-man crew whose job it is to wash all our pots and pans and stainless steel cooking utensils, along with the day's collection of reusable plastic trays, cups and bowls. Our kitchen feeds about 500 inmates three times per day.
Today, because there was so much to do, the officer who oversees our area knew we'd never finish washing everything by the time our shift was to end. So he asked if I'd like to volunteer for overtime. He was overjoyed when I said yes, as most of the time no one wants to work beyond their assigned shift. So this saved him the hassle of trying to persuade one of us to stay, as the work is hard, and the pay is low.
I am paid 88 cents per day for working in the kitchen. This comes to $4.40 per five-day work week. But being I got two hours overtime today, I'll be making an additional forty-four cents on this week's pay stub. Not bad. At this rate, it won't be too much longer before I'll be able to retire and purchase my dream house in Bermuda. Ha!
