It irks me whenever I hear people talking about prison being a country club...
The reality is that prison is a boiling cauldron of anger and tension. The potential for violence is everywhere, and the feeling that something bad could "pop off" at any moment is always on the minds of both the inmates and staff.
And today was such a day for violence. Earlier, at breakfast time, an inmate living at the A-North housing unit was stabbed. As a result, the prison was on semi-lockdown for about an hour. Work assignments and class studies were delayed until the situation was brought under control.
A guard told me that a guy got stabbed in the head as he was trying to evade a prison-made knife thrust. His wound was bloody, as head wounds usually are, but not life-threatening.
Now things are back to normal and the matter was treated as if nothing had happened. Of course, the victim is now in the Infirmary while the attacker has been placed in the Special Housing Unit (also known as SHU or the Box). Such is prison life.
