Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge
can have great confidence as we hold to the
hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong
and trustworthy anchor for our souls...

Hebrews 6:18-19 NLT
It's another hot summer...
High humidity. Sticky, sweaty days and nights with lots of stagnant air inside the cell block. As a lover of cooler temperatures, I'm counting the days until fall arrives. And of course, with fall comes the changing colors of the leaves on the trees. It's the season my tree friends, Miss Goldie and Mister Orange, live for. So do I.
For those in prison, summer brings its own challenges. The heat makes for poor sleeping conditions, often causing tempers to rise. Minor irritations become sources for fights. Noise levels increase, and frustrations do so as well. During the oppressive months of summer, a cell block can quickly become a steaming cauldron of violence.
In my many years of incarceration, I've had to put up with all kinds of difficulties. It hasn't been an easy.
But what I am thankful for is having what the Bible says is an "anchor for my soul."
The harshness and rigors of prison life often do not allow for sufficient physical rest. However, one thing that incarceration cannot do is to keep my soul from getting its rest. This kind of spiritual refreshing can come only from Jesus.
Messiah Jesus is both Shepherd and Anchor of my life. He feeds my spirit with his word so that I am always filled with supernatural joy and peace. While at the same time my soul is anchored securely to His side, thus providing me with abundant rest, even as unrest stirs all around me. For this I am grateful.
