I was now back in the States...
With reassignment orders in hand, I arrived at Fort Knox, Kentucky, my new post. My orders were to report to the headquarters of the 58th Infantry Division. And I did just that. I reported to that location only to find the doors to the building shuttered.
Confused, I walked down the block to the entrance of the Headquarters of Fort Knox's elite Armored Division. I then told the captain who was sitting at the entry desk that I had official orders to report to the Post's 58th Infantry Division. With a puzzled look, he blurted out, "Soldier, the 58th Infantry was disbanded more than a year ago."
From here, the captain called Post Command to send a jeep to pick me up and take me to the Fort's Reception Center. Then, once in Reception, the officer in charge looked over my papers, and shaking his head in bewilderment said, "Soldier, the Army messed up!" Actually, he said it more bluntly using the standard "F-bomb," which if anyone knows anything about the Army, is the most often used word by soldiers. And I suppose by sailors, too.
So here I was on an Army base which had no need of an infantryman. I was to learn that my correct destination should've been Fort Riley, Kansas. But I was hoping to stay at Fort Knox. Little did I know, however, that the God who I was yet to come to know, had a plan that was being worked out. In fact, I would not discover this until years later.
My ending up in Kentucky appeared to be nothing more than human error. But the Lord of the universe was making moves. He had me sent to Fort Knox to learn several skills that would come in handy for me in the future.
