The music of the sparrows has been forever silenced...
As I have been sharing with the readers of this journal, construction workers have broken apart all the cinder blocks which made up the outer wall of the building I live in. This has been an ongoing project which began last year, and will probably continue well into next year, too.
Workers from a private construction company were hired to replace the older, deteriorating blocks with new and stronger ones. For the facility, it's a security upgrade. Nevertheless, it's a project that's no doubt costing taxpayers millions of dollars. But for me, it has cost my beloved sparrows a home. It was a home they'd made for themselves in holes that began to develop over time in the original blocks along the outer wall due to erosion and other factors.
Gone now is their music and companionship. Their pleasant tweets, sharp chirps and delightful whistles, which graced my ears almost every morning and at various times throughout the day, have been stilled. They've gone in search of a new nest, and a new place to raise their young.
"Goodbye, friends. Thank you for the years of lovely songs."
