This was the second Sunday in a row that I was asked to give the sermon...
It was the second Sunday in a row that our scheduled guests did not show. So once again I had to step to the podium. It was, I confess, a semi-impromptu message as I only had about ten minutes to prepare it. But God was faithful. Somehow everything turned out well, surprising even myself. Yet, this is how I know it was all the Lord's doing. Because if the message was from my own head, I'd have messed it up.
My sermon was about prayer. Very simple. I explained to the congregation that God uses our prayers to break down the strongholds of adversity which sometimes come against His people. I said, too, that our prayers can serve to summon help for our fellow Christians. That it is the responsibility of every Christian to pray. Our prayers do not have to be long, I said. Nor do they have to be eloquent. They just have to come from the heart.
The Scriptures the Lord had me to share with the men were: Romans 15:30-33; Colossians 4:2-4; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; James 5:13-16, and Ephesians 6:10-18. I read each passage out loud while the congregation followed along in their Bibles. Afterwards, I thanked the Lord profusely for His help in preparing and delivering the sermon. Mission accomplished!
