Create in me a clean heart, O God;
and renew a right spirit within me.
Psalms 51:10
Because today is Independence Day, I am off from work...
and renew a right spirit within me.

And with the temperature in the high nineties, I decided to spend the day indoors catching up on chores and reading my Bible.
This morning, during my devotional time, I had been thinking about my heart. Men my age are usually concerned about their physical heart and overall health. And I'm no exception. I have to watch what I eat and get exercise when I can.

However, I was thinking about my inner heart, and about the Old Testament's King David as well. He was a man with a heart of love for God, yet could be quick to shed blood. As the Scriptures reveal, he lied, he committed adultery, and he murdered the man of the woman whom he would later take for his wife.
I know the heart of man is "deceitful," and "desperately wicked" (Jeremiah 17:9). In its fallen state, a man's heart is capable of the worst of sin and atrocities, and there are no exceptions. Some may scoff at this, but this is what the Bible teaches.
Yet, the good news is that one's heart can be made brand new. Yes, a dirty and sinful heart can be completely cleansed by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is what He has done for me, and for every man, woman and child who has placed their faith in Him.
