Time is moving along…
I moved out of my previous cell block on December 22nd of last year. It's been almost three weeks. Change is never easy, but it was worth it. I feel more useful where I am now, working as a caregiver for those who need to use a wheelchair in order to navigate through the prison.
I also get to socialize with whomever I'm assigned to on to any given day. I spent many years doing this when I was at Sullivan Correctional facility where I was given permission to assist the men who were designated as having "special needs," which included those who suffered from mental health issues.
Helping others in need has been both rewarding and fulfilling. Being a clerk and helper in the prison's chapel is okay. Doing the necessary paperwork plus cleaning the chapel is needful, indeed. But there's also a degree of isolation at having to be inside all day. Now, however, I only have to work in the chapel in the afternoon, while doing the mobility guide job in the morning.
As for the housing unit I now live in, I'm all unpacked and situated. New faces and friends. New opportunities to share my faith, plus having to find my place in a new social order. Settling in to a new environment is never easy, even more so in a correctional setting.
