The year began on a good note...
Earlier today, I had a visit with an amazing woman who's known as "Pastor Rosey." She has a passion for assisting young persons in finding the right path in life, to stay in school, and to stay away from guns and gangs.
Pastor Rosey runs a storefront mission station on Broadway in the city of Newburgh, New York. If anyone knows about Newburgh, it is a small city that borders the west bank of the Hudson River. A great location. But much of the city has been ravished by drugs, gangs, crime, alcoholism, poverty and hopelessness. Of no surprise, many of Newburgh's youth have no parental guidance, or very little. As a result, many venture down wrong paths. Newburgh is often in the local newspapers, but usually for the wrong reasons. Therefore, many adolescents feel they're without hope. News reports over the years tell of kids going entire weekends without normal meals, getting their basic nutrients from breakfast and lunch meals served at public school cafeterias.
In the midst of all this hardship and crime, is Pastor Rosey's place. I've written to her many times throughout the years, telling her that her storefront ministry is a lighthouse in a spiritually dark place. That she and her coworkers are beacons of light shining God's love to those who would otherwise not know about Him.
Their inner-city mission is known as NORTHEAST GATEWAY TO FREEDOM. They provide food, encouragement, compassion and kindness to all who need it. They work hard to help Newburgh's youth make it safely to adulthood.
Sometimes Pastor Rosey shows the kids my DVD called, THE CHOICE IS YOURS. It's about adolescents who made some bad choices in life and what they had to learn the hard way. But then live to make the best choice of all. I did the 30-minute film with youth who were then affiliated with Teen Challenge or local churches.
It was good to meet Pastor Rosey, along with two of her coworkers. I was privileged to spend a few hours with them. We ended our visit, each taking a turn to pray. My prayers for NORTHEAST GATEWAY TO FREEDOM and for the youth of Newburgh will continue for sure. It was a blessed day for me.
