Once again, I am looking out the window of my room in the prison's infirmary...
Yesterday I wrote about the herd of eleven deer I saw all huddled together. While today, I'm watching five deer as they search for food. Today, however, there's a fresh blanket of snow on the ground, which I'm sure has made it harder for them to find something that is edible. The small shrubs and brambles they'd usually nibble on are hidden by knee-deep snow.
The sun is also exceedingly bright today, which is causing the new layer of snow to shine like diamonds. But it's much too cold for the sun's rays to melt it. Still, I continued to spend much of the morning watching the deer as they ambled along. Their faces appeared forlorn as food was obviously scarce. At times like this, I wish I could go out there with a bucket, filled with fresh apples. Deer love apples, but even with good intentions, I'd probably be doing more harm in the long run. Strong survivalists that they are, it's best they never begin to depend upon people.
