Yesterday I spotted a herd of eleven deer, mostly young does, all huddled in close proximity to each other, maybe for protection or warmth, or both...
I watched them from the large window in my room at the infirmary. Unlike the cell blocks at the prison which have no views, other than being able to see a small concrete courtyard from windows on the tiers, the rooms in the infirmary have windows. From them, one can see a large expanse of state owned land which is off limits to the public and is part of the property of the facility. And in this area of many open acres, a plentiful number of wild deer are free to roam.
I found the deer fascinating to watch as they made their daily search for food. They will quickly bolt when spooked, but I am also seeing for the first time how strong they are. Having to survive long winters in the bitter cold, these creatures are showing me a toughness from within which allows them to make do with less when they have to, and endure hardship when necessary. These deer are as tough as they are beautiful.
