I have begun to put together a teaching from the Bible on the subject of selfishness...
Christ taught His disciples the importance of putting others first before one's self, which of course goes against the natural tendency to look out for "Number One" (yourself). Satan, as the Scriptures describe him, is the ultimate example of selfishness. He somehow managed to lead about one-third of the angelic host astray, thus sealing their eternal doom. His favorite words, as recorded in the Word of God, are, "I will."
A selfish individual is a "god" unto himself. Frankly, everyone is born with a fallen and basically
selfish nature. But it is only through the help of the Holy Spirit, and a knowledge of the Scriptures, that we can overcome the roots of selfishness. We learn what godly humility is by putting others first, and seeking to meet their needs before our own. It's a process that takes time. It is the life of Christ being formed from within us.
