As the readers of my journal know, there is a nest of wild sparrows located along the outer wall of the building I live in...
...just outside my window. And almost every day a flock of these interesting creatures will gather on my window's ledge to meet together and sing.
As a result, I'm able to listen to an array of pleasant chirps, tweets and whistles that keep me entertained for hours. Only a thin mesh screen separates them from me.
But the sad news is that the birds may soon be gone. Prison officials have already hired a local construction company to do repair work along the outer cinder block walls of all the buildings within the facility. The outer walls have been in need of repair for a long time because they're becoming weak due to erosion and our cold New York winters.
Since last year, the workers have been methodically filling in one hole at a time or replacing entire cinder blocks one at a time. However, they've stopped working for now because it is winter, but will resume the work in the spring. And unless something changes, very soon my sparrows will find the entry to their home sealed with cement. They will be devastated and so will I. The music I enjoy will be gone. I dread the day!
