So teach us to number our days, that
we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Psalm 90:12
The older I get, the more I recognize the brevity of life…
we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

"Where did the time go?" I would ask myself. The years seem to have flown by. And perhaps this is especially true for me. As a man long confined, there is little to tell the days apart. They've become one long stretch where the days meld into months, and the months become years.
But this is by no means a lament. If anything, it is an attestation to God's power to keep me focused and filled with positive energy, and hope.
Prison has taught me to value my days and not waste them. Life, I have since come to understand, is a gift from the Creator. It is not to be taken for granted. And things like freedom and family are gifts to be cherished. But oh, if I had only recognized these truths years ago.
In any event, in spite of prolonged incarceration, I thank the Lord for giving me a life of purpose. I awaken every morning with a sense of mission. I arise knowing that no day will go to waste.
Life is about worshiping and serving the Lord with a thankful heart, and loving and helping my neighbors when I can. To echo the words of the psalmist and make them personal as well, I wish to say, "This is the day which the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 118:24).
