The other day, two of my fellow inmates chided me for shoveling snow in the outdoor recreation yard after several inches of fresh snow fell earlier that day...
When I went outside, I spotted a lone shovel propped against a wall and decided it was time to get busy and try to clear a path for me and the guys to walk through.
But after about ten minutes of moving snow, I heard someone yelling for me to put the shovel down. It was a fellow prisoner; a second man quickly joined him, saying the same. They were concerned because of the heart attack I had a little more than a year ago.
I yelled back that I was okay, but they wouldn’t go for it. Then one of them walked across the yard and promptly yanked the shovel from my hands. It was all good-natured. I’ve known both men since coming here, and they’re decent human beings. They were concerned for me and didn’t want to have me drop-dead. I wasn’t going to, but they didn’t know that.
I kidded with them about their concern. I think they were both convinced they just saved my life.
