This I recall to my mind,
therefore I have hope.

Lamentations 3:21
In the time we had before this evening’s Bible study class was to begin, a friend and I were talking about the hardships that are associated with incarceration, and our need to maintain hope...
But it was not so much a hope of getting out of prison. Instead, it was a hope that would keep us going forward, rather than giving up. I call it a ‘living hope.’
I know from experience how easy it is to fall into seasons of discouragement and despondency, even for those who think themselves to be strong in their faith. In our conversation, I mentioned King David. How he had to learn to hope and trust in the Lord whenever he faced situations which seemed unsurmountable, and to the natural mind, even hopeless.
I added that since Bible times millions of saints had to learn how to have hope in God whenever they faced disappointments, and other difficult matters. Even Jesus, while dying on the cross, found himself uttering the words, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34).
Yet, He was able to complete His mission of dying for and paying the price for our sins.
For the Lord Jesus, giving up was not an option. It’s not an option for us, either. We, who are in Christ and belong to Him, have already been given the grace and strength to live with such a hope.
