Earlier today, a fairly new Christian and I were discussing the ways to grow in one's faith, and how to mature in the grace and knowledge of God...
It was good to see his eagerness and his desire to please the Lord.
I told him that Christianity is very simple. We are to believe in Jesus Christ, and to trust in Him at all times. And we are to believe in His Word, which never changes, and is settled forever in heaven (Psalm 119:89).
Of course, there is much more involved in becoming a stable and well-rounded Christian. But at its basic level, I explained to him, it is all about loving the Lord and trusting in Him as we turn from sin, and as we get to know Him better.
I also told him that while I have no fancy formula for my own devotional life, I try to pray often. I read my Bible daily, attend Bible studies in the chapel, and I make time to worship and praise the Lord so as to become more intimate with Jesus.
I added that I like to meet with fellow Christians. That we meet together not merely to socialize, but for the purpose of encouragement. In other words, that we keep an eye on one another, and as we cheer each other forward.
I said to this young believer that I often ask the Lord to keep me in a state of humility of mind. My heart should always be ready to bow to the Lord's will for my life. I continued by saying that having a devotional time with the Lord should be a simple and basic thing, and nothing mystical or weird or complicated. Growing in one's faith isn't hard, I told him. Just as a child grows into adulthood when given the proper diet, so we too will grow into spiritual adulthood if we do these basic things.
