But God has demonstrated His own love toward us,
in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

I wish to humbly proclaim that here at Shawangunk Correctional Facility, the church is alive and well. As I have so often stated in my journal and elsewhere, God is hard at work behind prison walls and in penitentiaries and jails, where He has come to seek out those who have lost their way.
Wherever there are lawbreakers, there you will find the Lord Jesus living and walking among them. In fact, this was one of the big complaints the religious rulers of Christ's day had against Him. Seeing how the tax collectors and "sinners" were all crowding around Jesus to listen to Him, the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of Moses, and those of the self-righteous crowd lamented, "This Man is friendly with sinners. He even eats with them" (Luke 15:1-2 CEV).
Yes, the Lord ate with prostitutes. He sat down with criminals. While He did not condone their behaviors, He sought to show them a better way to live, while at the same time helping them to get off the self-destructive paths they were on. His was a work of rescue and redemption. And this work is still going on today through the lives of His followers.
Speaking for myself, I'm so glad Jesus rescued me. Not only did He pay the price for my sins and crimes with His own blood, but He also restored my soul while giving me a good reason to live. This being to serve Him and be a help and blessing to others. And this is what I seek to do.
Today, I am thankful to have been given the chance to turn from my sinful ways and to place my faith in Him. It was more than thirty years ago now when Jesus visited me while I was alone in a prison cell. He heard my cries and saw my tears, and that was all He needed to extend His forgiveness.
And almost two thousand years later, Messiah Jesus is still doing the same thing. He offers sinners forgiveness, and a chance to begin a new life in him. This is good news indeed.
Whether one is in prison, or on the outside, God's hands are wide open. His mercy is extended to all.
