Now faith is the substance of things hoped
for, the evidence of things not seen.

...that we have every Tuesday evening from 6 to 7:30. I'm pleased at how well the class has been going. The ten to twelve men who regularly attend all seem eager to learn and contribute.
We've been looking at the topic of faith, what it is, and what it is not. I know there are a lot of crazy ideas and foolish teachings on the subject, so I want to make sure we get it right. It's an interactive class where I let the men ask questions, share ideas, and take turns reading from the Scriptures.
In this past Tuesday's class, we looked at the life of the apostle Peter, and the story of his stepping out of the boat that was out at sea. How Peter, at the beckoning of the Lord, began to walk towards Him. Then, when the wind began to blow and the water became turbulent, Peter became frightened and took his eyes off Jesus. But when he did, he immediately began to sink. The Lord, however, quickly reached out and rescued the now soaking wet apostle.
We then took the passage apart. We looked at Matthew's biblical account from different angles, with the focus on faith. We discussed what it means to leave one's "comfort zone" and to venture into uncharted territory. I then had the guys view the situation from the eyes of the other apostles, all of which decided to play it safe and stay seated.
Our 90 minutes together always seems to go by quickly. But we also have another Bible study every Thursday which goes from 6 to 8:45. This one is taught by another prisoner who is very knowledgeable of the Scriptures. He's currently been teaching on the subject of temptation.
I thank God for the opportunity to gather together with men who have repented of their past lives of crime, and for the sins they committed, and who now want to mature into the kind of individuals the Lord created us to be.

Note: The primary Scripture passage that was used for our study was Matthew 14:22-33.
