According to the biblical account of creation…
God made the seasons for "signs," as well as to mark time by days and years (Genesis 1:14).
And so it is that my calendar marks December 21st as the official beginning of winter, also known as the "winter solstice." The sun is now as far south of the equator as it gets. So, this being the case, my tree friends, Miss Goldie and Mister Orange, have since entered into a state of hibernation.
Yet they're smart enough to have embedded their roots deep into the ground. By doing this, their roots are well beneath the upper crust of the earth that freezes in the winter. This will allow them to continuously draw water and nutrients from the soil year-round. It will also allow them to live to see another spring.
As for me, I am awaiting the arrival of the warmer weather, when my friends will again begin to bloom. Their true beauty, however, will not be seen until autumn. Only then will Miss Goldie reveal her golden yellow colors, and Mister Orange his kingly and intimidating fiery orange gown.
