...as He moved the hearts and minds of the prison's administrative staff to allow me the opportunity to make a work assignment/job change. When I appeared before the Program Committee's panel, I asked if I could change my work assignment from being the chaplain's clerk full time, to going halftime. So instead of being in the chapel all day, I could work with the physically handicapped men in the mornings, and work in the chapel in the afternoons.
At first, the panel was resistant to my request. However, I explained to them why I wanted to make such a change. I then presented them with a certificate for completing a wheelchair training course, which I did years ago when I was at Sullivan Correctional Facility. And when I also showed them a recent report from Shawangunk's doctor that I am in good physical shape to do the job, they relented. The Committee deliberated for several minutes, but thankfully decided in my favor.
I got the job, and I was elated. Now I can help those who are confined to a wheelchair, which is one of my passions. I enjoy assisting others less fortunate than myself. I also believe it is one of my God-given callings in life. As a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, I want to do His will.
While the second miracle is that, because of my job change, I was moved to a different cell block. What a blessing! I'm now living in a better area where the handicapped men also reside.
Two prayers answered. Two miracles. To be granted permission to work with prisoners who have physical disabilities, and to live with them, too. Both happened in one day.
