With the Hanukkah season upon me, I decided to reread Anne Frank’s diary...
Anne lived from 1929 to 1945. She lost her life while confined to a concentration camp during World War II. Anne was Jewish. She went into hiding with her immediate family to escape the Nazi-inspired round up of Jews. While hidden away in a “secret room,” Anne began to keep a diary chronicling her thoughts, feelings and experiences. Anne’s pen became something of a sword as she slowly morphed into a survivalist, having to face the danger of discovery daily. Then, after the war, her father, who was the only surviving member of the family, returned to what had been their hideout. Here he discovered his daughter’s diary, which was still intact and undisturbed. |
Once published, Anne’s diary became an international sensation. It is still popular today, with millions of copies now in print in many languages. I learned about Anne Frank when I was in public school. Copies of her diary can probably be found in every library in America, even in prison libraries.
I enjoy the raw power and simple honesty of this young girl’s writing style. She gives me the inspiration to keep writing. As a believer in Jesus as the Messiah of the Jewish race and the Savior of the gentile nations, I sense that her diary may have a degree of prophetic significance. She mentions the Bible and even touches upon the Christmas story. More importantly, however, she acknowledges that another holocaust may happen again in the future.
Anne was not unaware, even at her tender age, that the Jewish race oftentimes becomes the scapegoat for all that ills society. I know that history will often repeat itself, and apparently, Anne recognized this, too. Will another attempt at mass extermination of the Jews come about? Probably.
