Whenever I am able to go outdoors to our main recreation yard…
... I always make it a point not only to check up on my tree friends, Miss Goldie and Mister Orange, but also on the deer who would oftentimes gather in the woods outside the prison's security fences.
Seeing these free roaming creatures has a comforting effect on me. Sometimes there will be only three or four calmly nibbling on the vegetation. While at other times there would be upwards of twenty or more deer spread out across the expanse of the land.
On some occasions, I've seen deer only thirty or forty feet from the fence line. While at other times they'd be several hundred feet off in the distance. They do not appear to have any kind of established feeding pattern. It seems as if they would gather wherever they felt like on any given day.
I know the deer are used to me by now. To them, I'm a familiar face. I think their instincts tells them I am not a threat. I'd also like to believe they can sense my aura and know that I actually like them. And I do!
Unfortunately, however, for unknown reasons I have not seen a single deer in more than a month. I'm puzzled, and disappointed as well. I'm sure they're okay. But for now they're nowhere to be found.
