Last week, I was watching the evening news on television when footage was shown of one of Staten Island’s ferry boats...
Seeing that timeworn sailing vessel as it chugged across the waters of New York Bay brought back good memories.
When I was a kid, maybe 13 or 14 years old, several of my friends and I decided to take a subway ride from the Bronx to Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. We walked around Manhattan for a while, enjoying the views and exploring the area.
We then decided to go to the nearby ferry terminal and board a ferry from Lower Manhattan to New York City’s borough of Richmond, more commonly known as Staten Island. Amazingly, the approximately twenty-minute ride was only a nickel. What could anyone buy for five cents today?
And when we reached the ferry terminal on the Staten Island side, we disembarked the boat and began to explore the local streets. It was something of an adventure, walking through a neighborhood we never saw before. But we found little to hold our interest. So we returned by ferry to Manhattan.
Once in Manhattan, we got back on the subway, taking the #6 train back to Soundview, where we lived. It was a day well spent.
