Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace
of God; lest any root of bitterness springing
up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.

It's called bitterness. If someone will not forgive, he or she will eventually grow bitter. It's true. Bitterness is destructive. It can damage relationships and destroy one's soul.
Having lived in prison for several decades, I can testify to the reality of meeting many men who are overcome with bitterness. Their lives seethe with anger, rage, and resentment, and they will blame everyone and everything but themselves for this. They will blame their victims or a difficult upbringing. They will point to poverty, peer pressure, or alcohol for what brought them to prison in the first place.
This is just my opinion, but a bitter individual is less likely to take responsibility for his actions. As I've already stated, he will blame his troubles on others, or on various circumstances. But I also believe that when a man puts his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, his bitterness will begin to dissolve.
God will soften his heart over time so that he could view his life in an honest way. He will also begin to take responsibility for the direction his life has taken.
Only then can real change occur. It will begin on the inside, and eventually, it will be noticeable to others. They will see a man who has true peace in his heart. He will also have peace with both God and his fellow man.
