Sea. His faithfulness endures forever."
Psalm 136:13 NLT
God's protection of the Israelites often reached monumental and historical proportions...
Biblical accounts confirm this to be true. And one famous incident which comes to mind was the parting of the Red Sea (see archeological evidence). In this instance, the Lord allowed the Jews to cross a wide expanse of water in order to escape from the clutches of an evil Pharaoh and his vast army.
Pharaoh wanted to drag the Israelites back to Egypt and return them to lives of oppression and slavery. He most certainly would have killed all who would have resisted, as well. But God wasn't having any of it. After miraculously separating the sea and drying up the ground to allow multitudes of Jews to cross safely to the other side, when Pharaoh and his soldiers likewise tried to cross, God caused the waters to rush back, thus drowning Pharaoh and his entire army. As a result of this miracle, the Israelites continued along on a journey that would eventually lead them to the Promised Land.
Yet as I was reading the story, I could not help but think of my own situation. Having a potentially dangerous infection which, had it gotten any worse, could have killed me. But it didn’t happen. Why? Because the Lord intervened.
I then thought about my reckless behaviors and the many times I contemplated committing suicide even as a child. Or how I would purposely put myself in dangerous situations because of my then unconscious "death wish." Yet the Lord, with His unseen hands, was there to protect me. I wouldn't come to realize this until many years later, however.
Death was pursuing me. And so was the devil. Both Death and Satan have been chasing after me since I was a young boy. I'm absolutely certain of this. Death wanted me in the grave, and so did Satan.
Yet the devil would eventually settle for making a slave out of me, which for a time, he did. But by the grace and mercy of God I have since been set free from his dark powers, and I am likewise being kept from the hands of Death, as well.
Because I now am a child of God through having placed my faith in the Lord Jesus, there is nothing that can separate me from my heavenly Father's love. According to the Scriptures, neither trouble nor calamity, hunger, sickness, nor persecution could do it. In fact, not even Death nor the devil himself, nor any demon, can separate me from God's love (Romans 8:35-39).
So as I think about the Lord's great power, such as separating the Red Sea to allow for His people to escape harm, I am both humbled and thankful that He has done the same for me. Not in such a dramatic way, of course, as he did for the Israelites back in biblical times. But for me as an individual, the miracles He performed in my life, which were many, were just as majestic. Through His loving hands I escaped Death, and I dodged the devil too. Amen!
