And although it's becoming old news to an extent, little by little the correction officers who walked off the job here at Shawangunk, are returning to the prison, which I'm thankful for. However, from news reports and the scuttlebutt of the officers, many of New York's other prisons are not faring as well.
Unfortunately, as it stands now, many prisons have very few officers on duty. As a result, inmates have been forced to remain in their cells, many without showers. And whether or not they have access to medical care or if they're even getting their postal mail, I don't know. But in those places the atmosphere remains ominous.
Thus, it seems that while there are National Guard troops overseeing those in less fortunate facilities, these prisoners are suffering more than the public realizes. Therefore, I have to count myself blessed, because while we still have a number of restrictions here at Shawangunk, such as no weekday visits and certain work and school programs temporarily discontinued, I can at least take a shower. Some prisoners cannot even get this.
I'm thankful for all those who are praying for the strike to end. May everything come to a peaceful and agreeable conclusion. I pray this in the Lord's name. "Amen!"
