I'm so happy to be back at my old job...
...which consists of being an Intermediate Care Program/Inmate Program Assistant. While this sounds like a big jumble, it basically consists of working with the inmates who have special needs, such as emotional problems and learning disabilities. They frequently have trouble functioning, and need someone to help them manage their lives, at least up to a point. I have worked at this particular job on and off, alternating between being an escort for prisoners who need to get around in wheelchairs, and those who require other physical help.
I was also the chaplain's clerk for several years. But out of all my assignments at this prison, working at the E-North Intermediate Care Program has been the most challenging and rewarding.
Monday through Friday, at about 8:30 in the morning, I leave my cellblock in the general population and head through the corridors to the E-North cellblock at the opposite end of the facility, where I work until about 11:45 A.M. My job is to help these men in any way I can, going from cell to cell, to check up on them, talk to them, see if anyone needs anything, and look for signs of depression or other problems.
Some of the men need encouragement just to get out of bed, to get dressed and get on their way. A man may need help writing a letter or filling out a form, such as a request for a sick call, or a dentist visit. Others need to fill out forms for prison issued clothing, etc. It is a job I truly enjoy and feel blessed to be able to perform.
