I am continuing to recover from a bad case of the flu which snuck up on me shortly before the New Year...
It has taken a lot of my strength, and I'm not fully over it. In fact, after yesterday's chapel service, I headed right back to my cell and fell asleep on my bunk, fully clothed. I was knocked out for at least several hours.
I'm still in the dark as well. My overhead fluorescent bulbs have yet to be replaced. Two separate work orders were submitted by two different guards more than a week ago. And still I sit in a cell without lights. By six o'clock each evening I have to depend on my little reading lamp. Using my typewriter is for daylight only.
Just yesterday I kidded with the officer on the night shift that if he could stop at the local hardware store on his way home from work and pick me up two bulbs, that I would install them myself, and reimburse him too. Of course, this wouldn't be allowed.
Prison, by its very design, can leave a man feeling like a helpless child, unable to do anything for himself, like changing a light bulb. For this five minute task of replacing two bulbs, I've had to wait about ten days now for someone from maintenance to show up. I suppose this is another lesson in patience.
